Dr. Brenda is the owner of Southern Cross Equestrian Facility and she lives and breathes anything to do with horses.

That’s a good thing – a great thing, actually – since it provides her with an inner passion that is evident everywhere you look at the Southern Cross operation.

Dr. Brenda refers to herself as a “full-time animal vet who just happens to have a riding academy on the side,” but she’s much more than that. “I’ve been in love with horses forever,” she says.

It would seem that way, for sure. As a second-generation veterinarian, following in her father’s footsteps, she developed a lifelong affinity for animals early on. “It’s always been a part of me,” she says.

I want to put together a world-class riding team, but at the same time I want to make sure that all our students grow to their full potential.

After high school, there was no doubt where she’d end up – at the University of Guelph’s Ontario Veterinary College, where she graduated in 1995. She started her career the same year in Fergus, then moved on to Park Road Veterinary Clinic in Brantford two years later. In the year 2000, she took over as owner.

With her husband, she built a house on the current Southern Cross property and they moved in with the rest of their family back in 2008. Immediately, she says, work began on building a barn, stables, riding arena and paddocks. In 2011, she officially opened the riding academy.

Today, when her Park Road clients ask how the farm is doing, Dr. Brenda’s face lights up. “It’s always a passion,” she says.

Which brings us to her goals moving forward: “I want to put together a world-class riding team, but at the same time I want to make sure that all our students grow to their full potential.”
